"Riding pit ponies underground was illegal and punishable by instant dismissal. However at the end of their shift some young drivers would occasionally race their ponies’ outbye for a small wager, the underground 'Derby' was enjoyed equally by the ponies and their 'Jockeys'"
The original painting has been donated to the Durham Mining Heritage Art Collection.
